Remember that time when you were watching your favourite TV program, when suddenly the power went off, the room went dark – and so did your TV? You might have wished you had some sort of machine that could convert mechanical power into electrical power (a ‘Generator’!) to get the lights and TV up again.

So let’s say you found yourself a generator, and got the electricity up and running. Then you discover you had tripped and made a pretty horrid mess when the lights went out. So you get the vacuum cleaner out and clean up the mess. You’ve just done an amazing thing! You have reversed what the Generator did! Inside the vacuum is an electrical ‘Motor’, which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy to suck up the mess.

The electric motor is made of transparent plastic to show how the inside components work. Set up the motor to run on battery power and learn how a motor works.

Then reconfigure the device to work in reverse as a hand-crank electric generator. Experiment with magnets to learn about the force of magnetism, and how magnetic fields relate to electric current. Build simple circuits consisting of the motor or generator, wires, and a light bulb to learn about the flow of electricity.
