HOLOGRAMS – STEM Science for budding young scientists.
The HOLOGRAM in this video is a 3-dimensional photographic recording of a field of light that is projected by laser beams that ‘bounce’ off each other, quite different from a real image seen by a lens like the human eye. The photographic ‘trick’ records the image that is formed when different coloured laser lights are scattered from an object, and then presents it in a way that appears 3-dimensional. You don’t even have to wear special 3-D glasses to see the images in 3-D.
The development of laser technology made holography possible. It was developed by The Hungarian-British physicist Dennis Gabor in 1947, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971.
The word Hologram comes from the Greek words holos (whole) and gramma (message). Holograms appear in movies such as Star Wars and Iron Man.
